Cattle armchair by Gibson Karlo for Design By Them
Dezeen Showroom: the rugged aesthetic of the Australian outback meets the sophistication of contemporary design in the Cattle armchair, created by Gibson Karlo for the brand Design By Them.
Karlo took inspiration from the industrial metalwork seen on structures such as silos in the Australian rural landscape for the Cattle chair, adapting a style of joint where tubular metal is flattened and screwed together at points of intersection.
The usually rugged joint is given a refined and softened interpretation in the chair, combined with invisible connections and high-gloss finish in two refined shades: Merlot and Camel.
"The compressed tubular connection is a process rooted in agricultural metalwork," said Karlo. "We refined the typically harsh transition between round tube and flat surface, allowing the two forms to flow together and making the join a defining feature of the piece."
The Cattle chair's steel frame is paired with plush upholstered cushioning that drapes over the armrests and backrests.
The upholstery is available in a curated selection of fabrics from leading textile brands Kvadrat and Maharam.
