Zzzigurat cupboard knob by Sans-Arc Studio for Bankston Architectural

Dezeen Showroom: ancient stuctures and experimental design approaches inform the Zzzigurat cupboard knob, designed by architecture practice Sans-Arc Studio for Australian door hardware brand Bankston Architectural.

A new addition to Bankston Architectural's Super collection of levers, knobs, pulls and cabinetware, the Zzzigurat cupboard knob features a striking geometry of successively receding stacked discs.

This form is based on the ziggurat – a type of massive, pyramid-like structure built in ancient Mesopotamia – while the extra "z" in the knob's name is a nod to Zzigurat, a key practice of Italy's Radical Design Movement.

"The collection draws inspiration from the Radical Design Movement, not particularly in aesthetics but more in philosophy – the idea of something different that breaks the mould, goes against the grain and contrasts the things that are out there in the market already," said Sans-Arc Studio director Matiya Marovich.

The Zzzigurat cupboard knob is made of solid brass and available in a choice of six finishes, including a matt black Nero colour and a Champagne coating created through Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD).

The Zzzigurat design is also available in other products, such as the Zzzigurat doorknob.
