As Foster + Partners Industrial Design rebrands and launches a new website, studio head Mike Holland picks 10 products that demonstrate the breadth of its work.
Foster + Partners Industrial Design, the design arm of architecture firm Foster + Partners, rebranded earlier this month with a Pentagram-designed graphic identity and a dedicated website.
"The new website has been designed to showcase our unique way of working to the world and illustrate the diversity of our projects," said Holland.
"The scale at which we operate is broad – balancing the time between creating bespoke elements, furniture, lighting and fixtures for architectural projects, as well as working directly with manufacturers."
Read on for Holland's pick of Foster + Partners Industrial Design's varied designs:
Datum Tableware for Fürstenberg
"Beyond simplicity of form, modularity was a key focus of the design, with the aim of ensuring each piece is interchangeable and stackable to facilitate storage and the presentation of food.
"The form and proportion were developed through paper models, refining the proportions to achieve a balanced and functional collection."
"As part of the design of the chair, Mattiazzi opened its factory doors for a detailed analysis of material and energy use in its production.
"With this EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) we refined the design to significantly reduce the embedded carbon."
Ixa for Artemide
"The lamp's round head is magnetically attached, allowing ease of movement.
"This interaction is further expressed in the counterweighted versions, which balance effortlessly, transforming the lamp into a graphic sculpture."
Soft Cells for Kvadrat
"A bespoke solution for a perfectly tensioned, acoustic, fabric panelling system, originally developed for 30 St Mary's Axe and later expanded into its own range.
"It has continued to be developed and refined over the years, with ongoing improvements in manufacturing and towards increased sustainability."
Flo for Lumina
"An appreciation of Italian lighting brand Lumina's heritage and the classic Daphine lamp, Flo was designed with the company's ethos in mind.
"The design removes materials and details, reducing the form to a pure silhouette. The switch was intuitively positioned at the head of the lamp, inviting user interaction."
Osuu by Walter Knoll
"This design was an exploration of steam-bending, ply forming and CNC machining to create a light and efficient chair.
"The team documented the process, producing a film that highlights the craftmanship behind Osuu. Filmmaking has become a part of our services, offering insight into the making of every product."
Node for Lindner Parc
"Architectural teams frequently asked if we knew of a well-designed smoke detector.
"This sparked the idea to develop a fully coordinated system of building devices for Lindner Parc."
Cordoba Chair for B&B Italia
"Design by making, the team developed the chair, from card models to a 1:1 CNC-machined timber frame.
"Close collaboration with B&B Italia during the Covid-19 pandemic ensured a seamless refinement from prototype to production."
1292 for FSB
"We believe better products are designed through a deep understanding of their manufacturing process.
"At FSB, production combines traditional craftmanship with advanced automated machines. Our handle design began as a hard-drawn spine, which was then translated into CAD geometry."
XYZ for UniFor
"XYZ is an eclectic, versatile and adaptable office system designed to accommodate evolving and dynamic workplaces.
"It is made up of scalable shelving and storage (X), seated and standing height tables (Y) and a unique patented sit-stand desk (Z)."
